I'm confused about how you and Goldhaber are using the notion of "economy". So when I listen to an album on my iPod while working out, this is an attention-economic situation? Obviously if I purchased the album, there's tangible value exchanged. But it seems we are leaving aside that for this notion of "attention economy". And I just don't get it.

As a consumer, your attention is in scarce supply. There are only so many hours in the day and energy in your brain. What you choose to spend your attention on influences what gets produced, what thrives and what barely survives. Artists who capture your attention, along with the attention of many others, are the true "winners" in this new economy, their anonymous fans the "losers" (er, not that I'm calling you one ;)). Myspace and YouTube leverage fame-seeking by putting the potential for attention-getting in the hands of everyone. Increasingly, your reputation and incoming links matter more than your bank account, because people will help a brotha out of if they dig what he's saying. Read Goldhaber for more, I'm just a bastardizing meme-parroting monkey next to him...
